Velvet in the Bush

Taken at The Greater Makalali Private Game Reserve, South Africa

This little guy is called a “Velvet Mite.” You may recoil in digust at the thought of mites in a wildlife photography site but even the little things are important in the bush… and great fun to look at if you’ve never even heard of such a creature before.

We were monitoring hyaena latrines at the time just after a rain storm and whilst I was running around recording scat, the volunteers found this little guy. None of us knew what it was so the books came out until it was discovered. They aren’t seen very often and only come out after rains usually so this was perfect timing for them and us!
