Taken at Kruger National Park, South Africa
This lion was taking advantage of a buffalo carcass by Satara Camp in Kruger National Park – very skinny and looking like it had seen a fair number of years of the park’s history. Adding to the beauty of its years, he unfortunately looked like he had been affected by the disease Tuberculosis. Lions are quite susceptible to the disease which is carried by animals such as buffalo and wildebeest which are then eaten by carnivores such as the lion. The most obvious symptom for visitors to observe in lions is weight loss.
In a side note, a 5-year study in Kruger came to completion a few weeks prior to this photograph being taken with a few hundred wild buffalo being monitored to discover how the disease progressed.
