Spending a week in Kruger, a friend and I had a shared goal – to get a decent picture of oxpeckers. Although I took some other pictures, it was not until I returned home to my computer that I realised this impala had a little friend on his shoulder.
An indicator of large game in the bushveld, their raspy call is often used by guides to indicate if they are near to not only general game such as impala or giraffe but larger game such as rhinos. This is due to their symbiotic relationship with the larger animals they remove ticks from. Oddly, they are not tolerated by elephant…
