Curious Cubs

Please welcome our very promising, new author, Alex Tweedie

Taken near Shingwedzi, Kruger National Park, South Africa

Being not only a regular visitor to Kruger but also the researcher of hyaena, I have actually gotten to know some of the clans within the National Park. One particular clan is around the Shingwedzi area and every now and then they choose to den in a spot I have spent many an hour with a big smile on my face. This particular occassion, I watched as 2 black cubs, 2 older cubs and their “babysitter” (likely the mother of one set of cubs) ran around and showed us their ambition to be mechanics (very common amongst hyaena cubs apparently!) until they got tired and started to snuggle up to the adult female for a while. This particular photo is of one of the older pair who started sniffing his “sitter” who then gave her a few licks before taking a rest
